HISTORY

• PARENTS His mom is a Japanese woman named Yamada Kazuki with the quirk Multiply. She met her husband David Jones, an Englishman, while he was working in Japan. His quirk is Voice, although much more quiet than Hizashi's. They hit it off and got married with David taking her name. David is rather chill but likes a good laugh and a good time. Kazuki is very high energy, the life of the party. Hizashi would have grown up working class to lower-middle class. (Their family takes the law very seriously with Kazuki's quirk! No cheating, no trouble!)

This means their quirks of voice and multiply combined to make Hizashi's OP one!

Hizashi is close to all of his family. They get regular calls and demand recordings of his radio show. They currently live in Tokyo.

• SIBLING Yamada Hinata is seven years older than her baby brother and has the quirk Multiply. She also has blond hair but has darker eyes and tends to take after her mother in looks as well, although is far less High Key than her brother. Very protective joking type. She calls him Hicchan. He calls her Nacchi.

She is married to Yamada Hajime - who has a dog quirk. Specifically he looks like a somewhat human Doberman Pinscher. Very terrifying looking but in personality he is a bit boring. He likes finances and business. They have two children! One is Kenji (boy, 6) and Miho (girl, 4). Kenji is very dog-like and wants to be a pro hero. Miho only has some dog traits to her and eventually will have the a sound related quirk, too.

• GRANDPARENTS His Japanese grandmother is still alive and very involved in his life. Both English grandparents are also alive. He doesn't get to talk to the latter as much because of time differences but they've picked up emailing to make it easier.

• SEXUALITY & PARTNERS Hizashi always knew he was bi and honestly didn't really struggle with it? He knew it would be rather complicated to navigate the dude part but managed well enough. He's had at least two boyfriends and two girlfriends, but none of them have ever really lasted long. He came out to his parents with his first boyfriend and they couldn't have given less of a fuck if they tried. As an adult, I imagine he has a platonic fuckbuddy relationship with Midnight.

• COLLEGE At some point, he probably studied overseas. Kind of easy to do when he had family to stay with in England. Not sure for how long. He has to have an equivalent of a master's to teach in high school as per Japanese law.

PERSONALITY

• GENDER (PSLs ONLY) It doesn't come up much but he is non-binary. He/him or they/them. Doesn't really matter. He prefers not to be called masculine words like man. If asked, his gender is "sunbeam." (This can be optional in our PSLs though I would highly prefer it.)

• ERASERHEAD Okay, so. This isn't your typical movie. As an American born and raised and a movie buff, I barely know about this movie. Therefore, Hizashi is into some weird ass movies. I doubt he's the type to know what mise-en-scene means or different movements, but he doesn't shy away from films just because they're black and white or silent. So far I've had him talk about Nosforatu and Dr. Caligari. I also suspect he loves shitty B-movies.

• COOKING & FOOD Pretty decent cook! Strength lies more with Japanese food than Western food, but can do the latter for sure. Has a taste for black tea because of his dad - it reminds him of home and comfort! He stress cooks. It makes him feel like he's doing something productive even when they don't need that much food...

• MUSIC Not a snob. If he can throw down, he will enjoy the shit out of it. Prefers rock and roll but oh hit him with anything, dude. Anything. He'll even take that cowboy shit.

• HORROR He's a baby but likes to torture himself.

WITH SHOUTA

• TIME He's literally loved him since high school. Maybe not the first year, but definitely by the second.

• PARENTS His parents are well aware he's still pining over this dude. This infuriates pops. "What my son isn't good enough for this dingy prick?!"

• HINTS He's asked him out and flirted with him dozens of times but it's never worked. Probably some combination of Shouta not being able to be in a relationship, thinking he's joking, or not picking up on it.

So... Why do you play Hizashi as half Japanese?

We don't have a lot of evidence for his personal life, due to the nature of canon. However, I think a strong case can be made for this.

• Appearance. Yeah, I know, it's BNHA. Quirks make people pink and stuff. But his face looks very similar to the American cheerleaders brought in for the Sports Day arc. This is how Horikoshi draws Westerners and you gotta admit, that is damn close to Hizashi.

• English. His English is good - wicked fluent and natural. Mostly, though, he does the thing where it seems like English is way more natural to him than most. I realize as an English teacher he would have to be fluent. But! He even says Japanese loan words the English way. Check here for his pronunciation of "beer." Japanese people would say "Biiru" - he says "bi-ah."

This is obviously all just theory, but I don't think it's too far outside of the realm of possibility to work into a reasonable headcanon. All the stuff about his family (and exactly what Western country he's got ties to) are 100% my invention, just for fun. I like fun.
